From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You should seel see an overview of your Mac, including its model name and serial number. If you see a window like this, double-click the version number beneath “OS X” to show the serial number. A Windows 10 device, phone, and pretty much anything that connects to a network has a unique identification number known as the media access control (MAC) address embedded on the physical network.
Your Mac provides several tools to help you identify it. The simplest is About This Mac, available by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. The other is the System Information app. Learn how to use these tools to identify your Mac.
If you don’t have your Mac or it doesn’t start up, use one of these solutions instead:
- Find the serial number printed on the underside of your Mac, near the regulatory markings. It’s also on the original packaging, next to a barcode label. You can then enter that serial number on the Check Coverage page to find your model.
- The original packaging might also show an Apple part number, such as MMQA2xx/A (“xx” is a variable that differs by country or region). You can match the Apple part number to one in the list below to find your model.

Can I track & find my Mac using the serial number?
Unfortunately, despite there being some misleading information online, it is NOT possible to track your Mac using the serial number alone – your Mac MUST have ‘Find my Mac’ switched on, or you must be using an active tracking app.
If your Mac has been stolen, here are the steps you must take:
- Change your Apple ID password immediately to stop anyone from getting into your iCloud data or using services (such as iMessage or iTunes).
- Change your passwords on all of your other accounts – including email and social accounts.
- Report the theft to the police. You will need your serial number for this, which can be found on:
- The product's original packaging - check the barcode for the serial number.
- The ‘Devices’ tab in iTunes preferences.
- The original product receipt or invoice.
If you do have ‘Find My iPhone installed, follow these steps:
1. Sign in to iCloud.com on another computer.
